The internet serves many purposes, from research to shopping, keeping in touch to booking travel, and pretty much everything in between. One large sector of the internet is dedicated to online gaming. While there are several different types of online games, massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) have it in their title just how prominent they are: massively prominent, and that is what sets them apart.

Those who may not be familiar with the term have likely heard about MMOs, or about Games like World of Warcraft, EverQuest, Final Fantasy or Second Life. The popularity of MMO’s grew out of console video games which are still popular but expanded online as the internet gained popularity. From there, Role Playing Games quickly rose to notability and has since been one of the most popular genres of role-playing games. Dungeons and Dragons is one of the most well-known RPG that originated long before the computer, and online games grew in popularity and are considered the foundation of many modern online role-playing game.

The first online graphic MMO debuted 30 years ago in 1986 and was a flight combat game called Air Warrior. As its graphics improved, it also became the first 3D MMO, making it one of the pillars of the online world today.
As technology advances, so do the games. With the prevalence of mobile devices in the modern era, many game makers are expanding their products to make them compatible with smartphones, tablets and other on the go devices.


For many years, MMO games were constricted to a fair niche market filled with hardcore gamers, as RPGs dominated the game style and left many people uninterested in the game style. Over the years though, games evolved and introduced games that would appeal to many different demographics. While RPGs typically revolved around fantasy worlds, first-person shooters, sports games, and science fiction games introduced a whole new demographic to MMO’s.

Social Aspect

People don’t just play these games for the action and adventure, for many, the social aspect is just as important as the game content itself. Many players become integral parts of thriving online communities, making friends and meeting people from all over the world. For many people, this is an excellent way to socialize, especially those who are shy, located in remote areas and a huge variety of other reasons. Many people find they can be their truest self from behind their character on a screen, while others can be someone they wish they were in the real world. There have even been stories of romances born out of online game communities.

Making Money

Aside from the virtual worth players gain playing these games and earning coins, the games are also a considerable part of the video game economy. Some individuals spend hundreds of dollars buying expansions for games, purchasing merchandise and on subscription fees to name just a few. It is with these funds that the games remain fresh for all players
